Probiotics for dog ear problems

Can probiotics help my dog's ear infections and yeast problems?

Natural help for dog ear infections and yeast.

Yeast infections and chronic ear problems can cause your dog untold pain and discomfort. If your dog's ear problems are caused by an overgrowth of yeast or bad bacteria, the combination of a high dose probiotic, the right enzymatic ear cleaner, (with or without hydrocortisone) along with a change in diet can help her body repair naturally.

Before discussing natural DIY’s for your dog’s ear problems, lets first rule out what can’t be treated at home and when you should take your dog to the veterinarian for help.

  • Hematoma: (a broken blood vessel in the ear causing extreme swelling heat redness and pain and requiring immediate surgical treatment.

  • Ear Mites: If extreme tenderness, redness and itching is accompanied by a black tar-like discharge, you could be dealing with ear mites (common in cats) again a condition that requires your good doctor’s intervention.

Symptoms of an ear infection or yeast overgrowth in your dog’s ears include:

  • Wax buildup in the ears red, brown or yellow thick discharge, strong yeasty odor (healthy ears should be pink and shiny with no excess wax or smell.)

  • Scratching and itching at the ears as your dog tries to relieve the intense irritation.

  • Smelly foul odor.

  • Rubbing ears on floor or furniture, walking with head tilted, loss of balance in extreme cases.

Common causes of ear infections in dogs.

Some breeds for example, Cocker Spaniels and Basset Hounds are more prone to yeast issues because of the structure of the heavy ear leather which closes off the ear canal and doesn't allow air to circulate.  That warm moist environment is perfect for yeast overgrowth, especially if water gets in the ear canal it's not long before your dog could have a raging yeast infection.  Other risk factors include:

  • Food Allergies: It's important to eliminate grains like corn from your dog’s diet if she’s sensitive.

  • Hot humid weather can be a factor or make infections worse.

  • Using the wrong products to clean the ears: Care must be taken not to alter the PH or increase humidity and moisture.

  • Water entering the ear canal during bathing or swimming.

  • Antibiotic use. An ear infection can follow a course of antibiotics.

  • Poor immune health: Allows bad bacteria to cause an overgrowth and result in an ear infection.

Be careful with DIY's like using apple cider vinegar for your dog's ear problems.

While apple cider vinegar can be beneficial for some pets, using undiluted ACV in your dog's ears can cause severe pain and irritation.  Proceed with caution and only on the advice of your veterinarian.

A natural way to cure many dog ear infections.

If your dog is suffering from a yeast infection and you've tried other remedies without success, these 3 simple steps might mean the end of her suffering:

Step #1.

Add a multiple strain, high CFU probiotic to her diet.  I've had great results with both of ours (of course or I wouldn’t use them). I slightly prefer our Advanced Probiotic for allergies, one capsule sprinkled over the food twice daily for 2 weeks, then one capsule daily for maintenance.

Probiotics help dogs with ear problems by building a healthy population of good bacteria in the gut and enabling your dog’s system to fight the bad bacteria naturally. Probiotics also help normalize digestion and that can be key in helping fight both environmental and dog food allergies, often the underlying trigger for ear infections and yeast.

Step #2.

"After many expensive vets visits with all kinds of pills and ear drops I tried this and in 3 days her ears were so much better and after 1 week they are 100% great! I am impressed with how fast it worked and my dog loved when I did her ears. The horrible smell is gone and all the head shaking and digging is gone too. My dog and I are very happy. Step 3.  Next, check your dog's food.  If there is corn or grain in the ingredient list, replace it with a higher quality brand.  I've used Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Lamb & Brown good results.

Not all dogs that are plagued with ear problems will respond to these 3 steps, again, there are numerous issues that can affect your dog and cause ear disease.
